Like other traditional Lingnan family-based ancestral halls, the fish pond outside the Hu Ancestral Hall in Huangpu Ancient Port reflects the light of the sky and the shadows of the clouds over the centuries. Within the exhibition space in the side hall, there is another "fish pond" mirrored by stainless steel pieces, reflecting the artist's works. Two fish ponds, one maps the natural landscape and the other projects images of man-made artworks, are the space in which we, in the here and now, are simultaneously connected to the past, the present and the future. Perhaps this is the reason for the title of the exhibition, "Feng Shui Fish Pond" , which brings us into the virtual world of art through the connection of two real spaces.
Major works of this exhibition were completed during Pool' s residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai in 2021. This series of works have been exhibited in Beijing, Wenzhou and back to Guangzhou for the first time, where the artist grew up. Inspired by BioArt and natural history, Pool' s inter-disciplinary works examine the dialectical relationship between virtual and physical. His innovative use of VR creates biological mutants, with inflatables and multimedia installations as displays. His visually striking paintings are an extension of his unique art philosophy.
The inflatable sculptures and paintings connect time and space, taking intangible, virtual emotions and expressing them in physical form, not only as a reflection on the current existential crisis, but also as a new vision of humanity itself and the world of the future.
Liu Jinpeng was born in Guangzhou and graduated from the Chicago Academy of Arts and the Royal Academy of Arts.
